The Labour Party in Oxford is split over whether Jeremy Corbyn should continue as its national leader.

A letter calling for Mr Corbyn to quit has been signed by fiveOxford city councillors- Christine Simm, Linda Smith, Louise Upton, Mary Clarkson and Susan Brown.

The letter was also signed by four members of Oxfordshire County Council and one member of West Oxfordshire District Council.

It comes the day after Oxford city councillors Mike Rowley, Dan Iley-Williamson and Sajjad Malik signed a letter in support of Mr Corbyn.

Ms Simm, Ms Brown, Ms Smith and Mr Rowley are all memberrs of the city council executive board.

Last night supporters of Jeremy Corbyn rallied to plan a potential party leadership campaign in Oxford.

Around 70 Labour Party members and Corbyn supporters from the Oxford area met at South Oxford Community Centre to re-affirm their support for the under-fire leader.

The meeting was called at short notice by Momentum Oxford - a group of activists involved in an Oxford for Jeremy Corbyn for Leader campaign last summer - following a vote of no confidence in the Islington North MP by fellow Labour MPs and calls for him to resign.

Mr Iley-Williamson said: "In the aftermath of the EU referendum, the Labour party should be pulling together to offer reassurance to those frightened or concerned by the results, and a way forward for the country as a whole.

"Instead MPs on the right of the party have chosen to distract from the chaos created by the Tory government in a long planned attempt to oust the leader without allowing members a democratic say.

He added: "Party activists in Oxford are ready for any leadership campaign."

Former shadow business secretary Angela Eagle is expected to mount a challenge to Mr Corbyn later today.
