JAMIE Cumming admits his time at Oxford United has had its ups and downs, but his focus is solely on ending the season on a high.

The 24-year-old arrived on loan from Chelsea in January, as a replacement for James Beadle, who was recalled by parent club Brighton & Hove Albion ahead of a move to Sky Bet Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

Cumming has played 19 games for United, all in League One, and kept five clean sheets.

He said: “To be honest, it’s been up and down. There have been tough moments, and I’ve had tough moments and good moments.

“Worrying about what’s happened in the past doesn’t make any difference and doesn’t help you in any form of life. All the focus is on Saturday and I’m personally really looking forward to it.

“It’s a massive game this weekend and it’s always exciting having something to play for on the last day of the season.

“We’re just trying to focus on ourselves. We can only control winning the game. I don’t think there’s any point worrying about what happened and what’s gone on previously.

“Being inconsistent throughout the season doesn’t really matter at this point. We’ve got a game of football to win, and that’s all we can focus on.”

The U’s make the trip to Exeter City on Saturday, and Cumming is pleased with the defensive solidity displayed in recent games.

In the last seven matches, United have conceded just three goals, with one of them from the penalty spot and one an own goal.

Cumming said: “We’ve been very solid in the last few weeks, and limited chances to the opposition. If you look at expected goals, not that it means anything, we’ve been in a good way recently.

“The focus is to keep that going and keep the performance level going into the weekend, and hopefully we’ll pick up a result.

“There’s nothing to not be positive about. We can get in the play-offs and everyone knows anything can happen in the play-offs.

“It’s exciting and better than having nothing to play for. We just need everyone to pull together now.

“I’m sure there’ll be lots of fans at Exeter, and hopefully we can make it a great day.”

Previewing the clash with the Grecians, Cumming said: “They’re a good side. They haven’t lost in nine and they’re on a very good run. We know it’s not going to be easy, and when you’re a team that’s got nothing to play for, it can go one of two ways.

“They can either take their focus or eye off the ball, or be relaxed, and play that way because of it.

“There’s no point worrying about that because we know can go there with intensity and get the result. That’s all that really matters.”
